The introduction of the new Thameslink trains and the recommendations made within the Chris Gibbs report for the Government highlighted the shortage of covered waiting shelters on platforms and issues with commuters boarding trains.

This Design and Build project involved the construction and installation of waiting shelters in numerous platforms along the Brighton mainline. Each platform works consisting of installation of foundations, associated civils works for CIS, lighting, CCTV installations together with the reinstatement of existing surfaces, were completed whilst the stations remained fully operational.

As the majority of platforms are constructed on ground bearing slabs, the new shelters were constructed at the back of the platforms on raised reinforced concreted arms formed off from load bearing blockwork.
